Come to Me in 2024
January 1, 2024 will mark the 14th year in a row that I will pledge to write something unique every single day of the year. When I began this practice back in 2011, I had no goal bigger than to write something every day for that stretch of 365 days. I definitely didn’t know I’d still be doing so for so many years after. For me, writing is powerful, it is healing, it is necessary. I’ve been a prolific content creator since I was a child and I harness that craft here in the context of this annual re-up promise. Sometimes what I churn out is drivel — sometimes it’s gold. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s serious, sometimes it’s poetry, sometimes it’s fiction, sometimes I turn over the reigns of creative control to y’all (my beloved readers) and sometimes I’m 100% in-charge. Over the years, I’ve had a theme for each year’s project, always starting January 1 and concluding December 31. Sometimes those themes have relied heavily on audience participations, other years, less so. All that matters to me is that I sit down to write, to work on my craft, to create some art, to put in the reps, to build this writerly muscle because it brings me joy, it helps me learn, and it gives me space to play. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve sat down to write my daily post and had no idea what I was going to write about, only to get up from my computer with gained perspective and understanding about whatever emerged as being on my mind that day.
It’s pretty cool, honestly.
That tradition will continue in 2024 with the theme “Come to Me.” I chose this title for a couple of reasons. One, my most listened to song in 2023 (according to Spotify Wrapped) was “Come to Me” by the Goo Goo Dolls. This tune was introduced to me by way of a sort of cosmic joke, a little wink-and-nod from Mother Universe, and then rose through the charts of my own music bubble over the course of last year. It made me chuckle when I learned it was my most listened to song of 2023. Of course it is, I thought.
Beyond the number of plays this song got during my 2023 rotation, I liked the notion of those words — come to me. 2024 will be a year of manifestation, of courage, of strength, of patience, and of promise — all key ingredients in the creation of who I am in the days and weeks leading up to the project’s beginning. 2023’s motto was “That which is for you will find you.” 2024 will build upon that theme, which can really be translated as trust in the process, trust in yourself, trust in this path, and trust in the Universe.
The song’s refrain:
Come to me, my sweetest friend
Can you feel my heart again?
I'll take you back where you belong
And this will be our favorite song
Come to me with secrets bare
I'll love you more, so don't be scared
And when we're old and near the end
We'll go home and start again
While, yes, this can so simply and easily be interpreted as a bond of love between two humans with soul-connected hearts, it can just as simply and easily be interpreted as a bond of love between an individual and her own soul. My daily promise to write is that brand of self-love and self-care that can be equated to rest, to life fulfillment, and to inner strength. Come to me is an invitation to manifest my own path, just as readily as it is an invitation for others to join me in my process, to bear witness, and, in turn, be part of this daily pledge to write.
